Craniosacral therapy is a powerful way to help reset the nervous system. It is a gentle, hands-on technique that works to reestablish flow of cerebrospinal fluid through the brain and spinal column, allowing for a deeply relaxing and restorative experience.
The craniosacral system is comprised of the membranes and cerebrospinal fluid that surround and protect the brain and spinal cord. Cerebrospinal fluid is produced by the brain and flows through this system, circulating between the cranium (skull), the vertebral column (spine), and the sacrum (lower back). Blockages can occur in the flow of cerebrospinal fluid and can result in dysfunction throughout the body. Common cause of these blockages include injuries, postural patterns, emotional patterns, and birth trauma.
Where there is blockage to flow, there is stagnation. And where there is stagnation, there is pain or dysfunction. The gentle techniques of craniosacral therapy assist the body to resolve these resistance patterns and reestablish the natural flow within the body.
Craniosacral therapy uses the body’s innate wisdom to restore health and gives the individual an opportunity to find a place of quiet and healing in order to self-correct. Because emotions are stored in our tissue, craniosacral therapy is very effective at helping to release emotional blockages in a safe way. It engages the subconscious mind and helps it to be able to dialog with the body in a way that can bring greater freedom and health.
What Are the Benefits of Craniosacral Therapy?
Craniosacral therapy complements the body’s natural healing processes and is a gentle, safe treatment that is appropriate for people of all ages, including newborns and pregnant women. It has been used to treat the symptoms of a wide range of medical problems associated with pain and dysfunction, including:
• Migraine headaches
• Chronic neck and back pain
• Sinus problems
• Depression and anxiety
• Cognitive difficulties
• Learning disabilities, ADD, ADHD
• Central nervous system disorders
• Chronic ear infections
• Chronic fatigue
• Hormonal imbalances
• Endometriosis and pelvic pain
• Orthopedic problems
• Traumatic brain and spinal cord injuries
• Temporomandibular Joint Syndrome (TMJ)
• Post-surgical dysfunction
• Motor-coordination impairments
• Trauma and PTSD
Energy work is another modality that can serve to restore health and vitality and can be combined with craniosacral therapy. It is an effective and gentle approach to working with physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual patterns by shifting their energetic roots. Before an ailment becomes physical, it exists on the energetic plane. By clearing these energetic patterns of imbalance, greater health and fulfillment can be enjoyed. Through energetic support, it can become easier to reconnect with one’s soul purpose and release that which does not serve.
What to Expect During a Craniosacral or Energy Work Session
In Craniosacral sessions, the practitioner uses a soft touch—about the weight of a nickel, to evaluate and release restrictions in the craniosacral system in order to improve the functioning of the central nervous system. The quality of the craniosacral rhythm is evaluated and any restrictions or blockages are treated with light-touch adjustments.
Energy work sessions can be done seated or lying down. The practitioner will connect to the client’s energetic field and use a gentle touch to help facilitate healing shifts. The session may incorporate sound healing techniques, essential oils, flower essences, or off-body techniques.
Both treatments are done with the client fully clothed and sessions last approximately one hour. Clients are often surprised by how deeply they are able to relax during a session and find that the treatment allows them to more easily enter a deeply meditative state.
